These shows were Led Zeppelin’s eleventh and final tour andcommenced on April 1, 1977, concluding on July 24, 1977. Broken into three legs, the United States of America 1977 tour was originally scheduled to end on August 13, 1977, but it was cut short due to the death of Robert Plant’s son. These concerts were performed to promote Led Zeppelin’s most recent album, at the time, Presence, which they had recorded while on a forced touring sabbatical following Robert Plant’s 1975 car accident, in Greece. The United States of America 1977 tour was plagued with problems, from the beginning. In addition to being cut short by the passing of Robert Plant’s son, towards the end of the tour, it was originally scheduled to begin on February 27 but was postponed to April 1, due to Robert Plant getting laryngitis. Furthermore, the band was in England, at the time, and their instruments had been shipped to the United States for the concerts, so they were unable to rehearse. There were riots at certain shows, Jimmy Page’s increasing addiction to heroin matched with a case of food poisoning, during the Chicago concert, plus a legal fiasco between the security Led Zeppelin had hired for the tour and legendary promoter, Bill Graham, during the Oakland, California concerts. In spite of all of the issues incurred, the tour was a massive success, financially, and while some of the concerts were filmed, none of the recordings were officially released.
